Who is Crystal Mangum? She’s the woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her. Now some four years later her true colors come to light. Not only did she wrongly accuse these students of a crime they didn’t commit, but she is now being charged with attempted murder and arson.
In a story on WRAL.com – “Crystal Mangum assaulted her boyfriend, set his clothes on fire in a bathtub and threatened to stab him, investigators said.”
Police charged her with attempted first-degree murder, five counts of arson, assault and battery, communicating threats, three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, injury to personal property, identity theft and resisting a public officer.
Mangum – who penned her memoir, “Last Dance for Grace,” in 2008 – was a student at North Carolina Central University in 2006 and also worked as an exotic dancer when she performed at the now-infamous Duke lacrosse party.
It was there, she claimed, that three white members of the team trapped her inside a bathroom and raped and sexually assaulted her.
The three players were indicted on rape and other charges on the basis of her allegations and were eventually exonerated after North Carolina’s attorney general dismissed the charges.
The case ultimately cost former Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong his job and he was later disbarred. He also spent a night in jail for lying to a Superior Court judge.
Every choice has a consequence. As a business ethics speaker and author, I often receive comments (either on the blog or via email) about the unfairness of the system. Many folks, like the Duke students, when in the midst of an unjust controversy, believe that there is no justice. The often feel that the perpetrator of the crime seemingly gets away free and clear.
But, every choice has a consequence, and, as is often the case, justice does prevail. In this case, Crystal Mangum has shown her true colors. She unjustly accused the Duke students of something they did not do. Yet, she seemed to walk away without a consequence for her actions. But, she is now facing consequences for other actions and those consequences will likely have a life changing effect.
Like others, I feel for Crystal, but, at the same time, I know that the choices we make today will define our lives in the future. Perhaps Crystal, with this new set of charges, will find that she’s being thrown off the “merry-g0-round” of the life she has known and will get a second chance to make a new set of choices. For her sake and that of her children I hope so. Yet???
